TRUNK(HOUSE) is a new hyperlocal immersive hospitality concept developed by the team behind TRUNK(HOTEL) located in a historical building - a former geisha house - within Tokyo’s Kagurazaka neighborhood (a Japanese historical district also known as "little Kyoto of Tokyo").
The one-bedroom property offers up to four overnight guests (or up to 30 for cocktail-parties) to reside alongside an array of newly-commissioned artworks by up-and-coming local artists to the internationally acclaimed. The body of works ranges from painting, sculpture, crafts, to paper cut-out art.
TRUNK(HOUSE) was created with the concept of "Tokyo Salon" as its core—referencing the many salons that permeated the city in the 17th and 18th centuries. These were spaces where artists and academics would come together to discuss and debate late into the night on issues that would shape the cultural landscape of the city.
By filling the space with contemporary art – and design created bespoke and from the likes of Stephen Kenn and Jean Prouvé – the team at TRUNK(HOUSE) hope guests will leave inspired.
Each artist was selected by the TRUNK team on the basis of their cultural influences and ties to Tokyo and Japan; in so doing, TRUNK have created a space that interprets contemporary Japanese culture through both a local and international lens. TRUNK(HOUSE)’s artistic offering forms part of its effort to preserve a unique Tokyo neighbourhood that is home to a thriving arts, culture and literature scene.

About TRUNK:
TRUNK is a new generation of design hotels that are bucking the atypical business and luxury hotel concept in Tokyo/Japan, which surprisingly lacks cutting-edge boutique design hotels. The TRUNK philosophy is all about making sure guests are able to immerse themselves in the most vibrant neighbourhoods in Tokyo and socialize to the fullest.
TRUNK(HOTEL) is the first property, which opened in 2017. Its design is by the acclaimed Mount Fuji Architects and the guest rooms and lounge are by Jamo Associates, with a modern living design pervasive throughout the hotel. The property is located in the trendy Harajuku/Jingumae district in Tokyo and is the first property by TRUNK Co., Ltd., with plans for additional hotels to come soon. Harajuku/Jingumae (within the Shibuya area) has a long history of nurturing diverse cultures, serving as a launching pad for Japanese innovation, thus making it the ideal first location for TRUNK.
Housed in a four story structure and one basement floor, TRUNK(HOTEL) features a holistic “live, play and work” environment where the art-filled guest rooms and suites blend in seamlessly with public spaces, dining concepts and a signature retail store. The hotel also features specially made in Japan products including bath amenities, and other items which can be purchased at TRUNK(STORE) on the ground floor.
TRUNK(HOUSE) is the second launch for the brand, with ten hotels planned within Tokyo in total by 2027.
