Launched in 2009 on Vieques Island, a tiny isle located 8 miles away from Puerto Rico and characterized by a massive natural park, the hotel was designed under the supervision of the luxury designer hotel chain Rockwell Group, together with a team of architects and designers led by Patricia Urquiola. The Milan-based Spanish interior design star confirmed her extraordinary value by fulfilling this hotel project.

The facility is completely surrounded by the immaculate flora of Viaques Island. White thin sand, turquoise sea, palm groves and mangroves frame the hotel which covers 30 hectares and offers 36 rooms overlooking the Atlantic as well as 26 suites with stunning views and private gardens. These are more than mere rooms or suites, as they represent the perfect merge amid cutting-edge design and local handicraft. Wide glass windows, essential lines, subtle coloured walls and tile flooring are the canvas on which flair and style paint. Vivid coloured pillows, unconventionally shaped sofas, unique seats made of recycled local materials, refined light curtains serving as gentle dividing elements; moreover, ethnic chandeliers, refined rugs, posters and paintings recalling the local style wonderfully contrast tables, lamps, design products and contemporary designer pieces of furniture scattered throughout the space. Bathrooms are spectacular too, with bathtubs exclusively designed by Urquiola for the W Retreat & Spa Vieques Island, a name that stands for comfort, relax and high-end taste. These are the keywords shared by any space of the hotel, whose core is the 6 thousand square meter SPA, lost in the blue of Caribbean sea and sky.
