DALLAS ESTATE This eclectic, worldly estate designed by Kari Whitman for a royal family is nestled into the exclusive Preston Hollow area of Dallas. Whitman’s main task was to modernize the 43-room colonial-style home, which had been in the family for decades but hadn’t been updated in over 25 years. She strived to make it artistic and fun, mixing old with new to create a unique and eco-friendly space. The royal family had a rather large budget which Whitman put to use designing a home that’s comfortable, elegant, and filled with exciting art. Whitman designed about 50% of the furniture and reused and reinvented as much of the existing furnishings as possible. To create a sense of continuity throughout the expansive residence, Whitman custom mixed dozens of shades of metallic oyster plasters from London and Italy. She also incorporated white and yellow brass with stainless steel for a true mixing of metals. Notable design elements include the 1,000 pound, hand-made, recessed door designed by Whitman. She also designed the striking dining room table and chairs. Whitman put a modern yet comfortable spin on these original pieces, which were inspired by furnishings she saw while traveling abroad. One of Whitman’s favorite areas is the master suite. After finding a table in Europe made from ball bearings, Whitman designed a stylish coffee table version perfect for a lady’s sitting area. The chic master bath is outfitted with all white onyx and a stainless steel bathtub. More bold statements include the carpet on the ceiling in the fashionable breakfast nook. The clients were in love with the carpet, but just couldn’t find the right place for it. Whitman’s innovative solution was to flip it and carpet the ceiling in the nook. Whitman also refurbished and recovered the mid-century modern chairs with great fabric for a thoroughly chic look. Another favorite is the orche chandelier in the main salon. It complements the original pieces Whitman designed to make the home feel elegantly timeless. Before photos available upon request.
