Is the exterior of your home in need of a drastic update? New windows, a new roof, new rendering or cladding, and new guttering can all make a difference to your home’s exterior. Even changing aspects of your home’s exterior on a low budget can make a dramatic impact on its overall appearance. A new garage door, a new front door, a re-paved drive and landscaping your garden are just some options for sprucing up the outside of your property.

Putting some zing back into the exterior of your property will add kerb appeal, drive up the value of your home, make you smile when walk up the drive, and possibly make your neighbours a teeny bit jealous! Here are 5 ways to make maximum impact and put a bit of zing back into the exterior of your home.

1. New or refurbished windows
Your windows are the eyes of the home, and their appearance and style can make all the difference to the appearance of your property. Give your home a contemporary makeover with new narrow, dusted aluminium window frames. Even inexpensive PVCu windows can make a difference to the appearance of your home, especially if your current window frames are somewhat dilapidated.
If your period property has sash windows that look as though they’ve had their day, don’t rule out an overhaul by way of repair. Original sash windows are an endearing and valuable aspect of your property, so replacement should only be considered as a last resort. Even rotten and damaged sash windows can be repaired by an expert. A good joiner will be able to cut out any rotten sections and piece in new timber.

2. Clad or re-render the exterior walls

If your home is looking a little dated because of its 1970s or 1980s stone cladding, or if your property exterior incorporates a mismatch of materials, why not consider an update. Dated cladding can be removed and replaced with a more modern alternative. Walls can be refinished in a different material and that will create a completely new look for your home. If you’re on a budget, a repaint in a neutral shade with masonry paint will still give your home exterior the lift it needs without costing the earth.

3. Replace the garage door and the front door
A quick and easy way to give the front of your home a facelift is to replace tired looking and dated doors. An unloved front door or garage door doesn’t give off a good vibe about the inside of your home. A new garage door is an easy way to bring a fresh and modern feel to your property exterior. Garage doors come in a wide range of colours and materials, so be sure to choose one that fits in with the style of your property.
Your front door is one of the first impressions of your home, and the style and colour of your front door can completely change the aesthetic of your exterior. Choosing a door with windowed elements may also be a good way to let more light into your hallway.

4. Landscape your garden
If your building work is up to scratch, perhaps you can set your attention to the garden. Choose a planting scheme that fits in with your property. If your home has a contemporary air, choose architectural plants to bring structure and shape to your garden and complement your property. For more traditional or period homes, a cottage garden will set a wonderfully romantic tone for your home. Peonies and roses are a must in the traditional garden landscape.
Have your drive, pathways and patio cleaned. Removing years of built-up grime will give them all a new lease of life. Either hire a heavy-duty jet stream power washer, or enlist a driveway and patio cleaning company to do it for you.

5. Update your roof
It’s amazing how a new roof can make such a difference to the exterior of your property. An average 1950s or 1960s house can become completely modernised with a new grey slate roof. The roof is the crowning glory of your home, and as a dominant feature can transform the look of your home if you change the shape of it.
Changing the pitch of your roof is a much bigger investment than simply replacing tiles, but if you dream of having vaulted ceilings inside your home, it could be a serious option. You may want to consider such a structural change if your roof has a rot problem or is sagging.
For a lower budget update, get a roof cleaner to remove built-up grime and moss. You’ll be amazed at how a simple clean can make such a difference.
