A garage dating back to the Twenties transformed into a 30 square meters apartment: that’s what’s happened in Seattle. The renovation of the space was by SHED: the pictures of the project have been posted on the studio’s website to show each step of the process. First of all the wood foundations were temporarily replaced to allow the building of a base that is now the storehouse of the upper apartment. The plumbing facilities were then installed: bathtub, sink, toilet, valves… all sharing recycled material. Finally, it was the roof’s turn, which now features a triangular window blowing warm air against the multifaceted walls, designed for passive ventilation.

The 30 square meters garage features a living room, a small kitchen, a bathroom, a small closet and a mezzanine bedroom. Even though everything is quite packed, the space is pleasantly well-lighted also thanks to the wall colors. All the facilities are stored in a single fir wood block which features the bathroom on the first side, the closet on the second, the mezzanine stairway on the third and finally the kitchen on the fourth. The project also includes many multipurpose elements, such as the mezzanine beam, overlooking the kitchen, which is also the pot hanger, to save further space. The studio also took care of the garden: after  being removed to allow the foundations replacement, the clods have been reused to create natural relaxing spaces adding a ‘villa feel’ to an out-and-out garage. The space has been decorated in a minimalistic way by the renter, who happens to be an industrial designer, probably the best profile to suit a studio apartment like this.
