After many working for many years in the Joshua Tree desert, California, Phillip K. Smith III made his dream come true by displaying Lucid Stead installation. The piece consisted in a former utility room owned by the artist for almost 10 years where he created an dreamlike world made of mirrors and light. The installation shined in the middle of the desert, with many different plays of lights and shadows based on the solar rotation: the result was a series of optical colorful illusions that made the building walls and windows appear and disappear before the eyes of the spectators.

The installations was based on the use of mirrors and LED lights that interacted with the sunlight to make colors change from pink to green and blue, until they disappeared, turning the desert into an art stage. The installation did not imply any wire or further element thanks to the employment of  Hot Purple Energy solar panels from Palm Springs, allowing the project to be as silent and essential as possible. During October 2013 Lucid Stead gathered many experts, bloggers and journalists: the project was apparently produced in a short time, yet it had been lying in the artist’s mind for a while. Despite the success of his creation, the artist said: “I’m not interested in replicate this experience because the Joshua Tree desert is a once-in-a-lifetime location. I might do other Lucid Stead projects somewhere else, because I want to deepen the Lucid Stead  concept around the world”.
