Contemporary architecture projects often feature the theme of continuity between interior and exterior, especially when a property overlooks a garden, This interior design project by Spanish H Arquitectes studio, winner of several awards such the Fritz Höger Preis 2014, makes continuity its own core.

Located in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Casa 1101 represents a new way to create a continuum with the surrounding garden: instead of relying on big glass walls, the project opted for a partition into three volumes, each one hosting a specific part of the house. Different in terms of height but all parallel to the main street, these red brick volumes are decorated with different-sized windows depending on their function, in a pleasant contrast between the red color on the outside and the white and grey hues on the inside.

The first Casa 1101 volume is dedicated to the kids, with the bedrooms upstairs and the playroom on the ground floor. The central box only features the 30 sq meter kitchen with 4 meter high walls. The last volume hosts the owner’s private area, with the master bedroom downstairs and the studio on the upper floor. The continuity with the garden is amplified by the linking spaces between the boxes, each serving a specific function: the one between the kids area and the kitchen is the entrance of the property, the second one linking the kitchen and the parents’ area is the actual living room. This public space is probably the most characteristic “room” of the project: a green house during winter, it turns into a fresh porch in summer.
